Radiant Floor Solar Heated Water Solar Electricity Micro Hydro Wind Energy

Gene Keil  Weaverville, NC

Description of the project

This two level, 2742 sq.ft. home was  built by the owner and designed by Jack Devitt of Devitt Design Services in Weaverville NC. .  The home incorporates passive solar design as well as an active solar system which supports the heating of domestic water and the hydronic radiant floor heating system.  The 200 sq. ft.  ( 5  @  4’ X 10’ ) solar collector  is transferring solar energy to the 240 gals water storage . The heat then is transferred to the radiant floor system, the domestic water or just as preheated water for the 30 gallon domestic storage. The back-up heat for both the radiant floor and the domestic hot water comes from a 92 % efficient L.P.-gas boiler with a modulating flame.

The radiant floor water temperature is automatically adjusted depending on outdoor temperature and the use of the solar storage is optimized by automatic monitoring of the required radiant floor temperature and the solar storage temperature.
